Picture this: you’ve landed your first decent client, sent the invoice, and they come back asking for your ABN. You don’t have one. Suddenly, 47% of your payment is withheld before it even reaches your account.
This happens more often than you’d think, and it’s entirely avoidable.
An Australian Business Number (ABN) isn’t just a box to tick. It legitimises your operation, opens up business banking, and signals to clients that you’re the real deal. Here’s what you need to know.
So, what actually is an ABN?
It’s an 11-digit number issued by the Australian Business Register that identifies your business to the ATO, your clients, and your suppliers. Unlike your Tax File Number – which is private – your ABN is publicly searchable. Anyone can look it up and confirm you’re legitimate.
It goes on every invoice, every quote, every business document. Banks need it. Suppliers need it. And from day one of trading, you’ll be quoting it constantly.
“Do I need an ABN number?”
If you’re running a business in Australia – yes. Full stop. An ABN is not optional once you’re carrying on a business. This is true for sole traders, freelancers, partnerships, companies, and trusts. If you’re earning income outside of traditional employment with the intention of making a profit, you need one.
The one exception is hobbies. Selling handmade goods at a market once a year? Probably not a business. Selling every week with stock management and growth plans? That’s a business, and you need an ABN. The test isn’t about how much you earn, it’s about commercial intent.
What happens if you don’t have an ABN?
Many clients simply won’t engage a supplier who can’t provide an ABN. It raises questions about compliance, insurance, and legitimacy.
How do you get an ABN?
Through the Australian Business Register online – it’s free. Most applications are processed instantly when your details check out. You’ll need:
- Your Tax File Number
- Your business structure (sole trader, company, trust, etc.)
- A description of your business activities
- For companies: your ACN from ASIC
When you apply, you can also apply for your GST registration, PAYG withholding (if you have staff), and other registrations at the same time.
A few things to get right from the start
Once you have your ABN, you’re responsible for keeping the details current. The Australian Business Register requires you to update your address, contact details, and business activities within 28 days of any changes. Outdated information leads to missed ATO correspondence – which is never a good position to be in.
And if you change your business structure – say, from a sole trader to a company – you will generally need a new ABN. The old one doesn’t transfer across.
The bottom line
If you’re in business, you need an ABN – it’s not optional. GST is a separate conversation, and whether you need it depends on your turnover. The cost of getting this wrong – withheld payments, lost clients, blocked banking – far outweighs the five minutes it takes to apply.
